Soybean Science: Let's Sprout a Soybean!
Primary Life Sciences - In this lesson and activity, students will learn about a soybean seed and it’s role in a soybean plant’s life cycle. There are modifications of the activity provided for grades K-3 to meet each NGSS listed below.
Students will:
Use observations to describe what a seed needs to germinate, and what a plant needs to survive. K-LS1-1
Make observations to connect a soybean seed to the plant that grows from the seed. 1-LS3-1
Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow. 2-LS2-1
Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all. 3-LS1-1
Be introduced to the process of photosynthesis. 3-LS1-1
Develop models to describe that a soybean has a unique and diverse life cycle. 3-LS4-3
Thanks to the generous contributions of the Kentucky Soybean Board, teachers and educators receive materials for this activity through workshops, the Agriculture Literacy Network, and our Sponsor a Classroom program.
