Create a Kentucky Farm
with Math Extensions
Students will use what they learned from watching the virtual field trips to create their dream farm on 100 acres. They may use the artistic stamps available to fill their grid, draw their own, or use a mixture of the two. There is also a writing activity on the back where students must explain how their farm will help their community and become a successful business.
We are currently working with teachers to develop a number of math connections for different grade levels. Examples are:
Counting and adding acres of crops, animals, and buildings (K/1)
Making graphs of different crops and animals
Writing and solving multiplication sentences to express the number of acres, crops, and animals
Calculating perimeter and area and cost of supplies needed
Coordinate plane and mapping
Calculating ratio and percentages
Calculating expenses, gross income, and net profits
Working within a budget
If you would like to help us create lesson plans and worksheets for this activity, please contact Jennifer Elwell at jennifer@teachkyag.org.
Intermediate and Secondary students who have completed the My Kentucky Home Provides What I Need lesson, may also enjoy creating their farms with the following scenarios. Place students into teams to develop a farm located in different areas of Kentucky with varying markets and topography.
